The Library at the End of the Road

HSK 4 · Xiaoli follows an unfamiliar road and finds a library full of unfinished books — one of them is her grandmother's diary.
小丽住的地方很小,每条路她都走过。
Xiaoli live (POSS) place very small, every (M) road she all walk (EXP).
Xiaoli lived in a small town and had walked every road in it.
可是那天早上,她突然看见一条她从来没注意过的路。

这条路在城市的最东边,又长又安静。
This (M) road at city (POSS) most east side, both long both quiet.
It lay at the eastern edge of town, long and quiet.
她想:“这条路是新的吗?我以前怎么没看见?”
She think: "This (M) road is new (Q)? I before how not see?"
She wondered, “Is this road new? How have I never seen it?”
她决定走一走这条路。
She decide walk one walk this (M) road.
She decided to walk down it for a bit.
走了很久,她在路的最后看见一座房子。

After a long walk, she saw a house at the very end of the road.
房子上写着两个字:图书馆。

On the front of the house were two characters: “Library.”
“可这里昨天还没有这座图书馆啊!”她小声说。
"But here yesterday still not have this (M) library !" she soft-voice say.
“But this library wasn't here yesterday!” she said softly.
她小心地推开了门。
She careful (ADV) push-open (PERF) door.
She carefully pushed the door open.
里面很大,到处都是书。
Inside very big, everywhere all is book.
Inside it was huge, with books everywhere.
一位老人坐在中间,向她笑了一下。
One (M) old-person sit at middle, toward her smile (PERF) one bit.
An old man sat in the middle and gave her a small smile.
“你好,”他说,“你想看一本书吗?”
"Hello," he say, "you want read one (M) book (Q)?"
“Hello,” he said. “Would you like to read a book?”
小丽拿起一本书,翻开看了看,可是后面没有写完。
Xiaoli pick-up one (M) book, flip-open look (PERF) look, but back not have write-finish.
She picked up a book and opened it, but it wasn't finished.
“这本书后面是空的,”她说,“为什么?”
"This (M) book back is empty (POSS)," she say, "why?"
“The rest of this book is blank,” she said. “Why?”
老人回答:“这里的每一本书,现在正在被一个人写。”
Old-person answer: "Here (POSS) every one (M) book, now (CONT) (PASS) one (M) person write."
The old man said, “Every book here is being written by someone right now.”
“世界上有人写一句话,这里的书就多一句话。”
"World on have person write one (M) sentence, here (POSS) book then more one (M) sentence."
“When someone in the world writes a line, the book here gains that line.”
小丽看了看那些书,发现一本上面写着她奶奶的名字。
Xiaoli look (PERF) look those book, discover one (M) top write (CONT) her grandmother (POSS) name.
Xiaoli looked through the books and found one with her grandmother's name on it.
她奶奶还活着,但是从来不提自己以前的事。
Her grandmother still live (CONT), but never not mention own before (POSS) matter.
Her grandmother was still alive, but never spoke of her past.
小丽翻开那本书,开始读。

Xiaoli opened the book and began to read.
书里有奶奶小时候的故事,有她爱过的人,有她哭过的晚上。

Inside were stories from her grandmother's childhood, people she had loved, nights she had cried.
小丽读了很久,几乎忘了时间。

她一直读到书的最新一句话——那句话就是奶奶现在正在想的事。

小丽轻轻地把书放回去。

她对老人说:“谢谢你。”

She said to the old man, “Thank you.”
老人笑着说:“快回家吧,去看看你奶奶。”
Old-person smile (CONT) say: "Quick return-home (SUGG), go look-look your grandmother."
He smiled and said, “Go home and see her.”
小丽走出图书馆,向自己的家走去。
Xiaoli walk-out library, toward own (POSS) home walk-go.
She left the library and headed home.
走到一半,她回头看——那条路还在,但是图书馆已经不见了。
Walk-to half, she turn-head look — that (M) road still there, but library already not see (PERF).
Halfway home she turned to look — the road was still there, but the library was gone.
那天晚上,她坐在奶奶旁边,第一次听她讲自己的故事。
That day evening, she sit at grandmother side, first time listen she tell own (POSS) story.
That evening she sat beside her grandmother and, for the first time, listened to her tell her own story.
