The Architect Who Disappeared

她把图纸拍照、登记，决定亲自去查清楚。

“姑娘是来看图书馆的吧？”老人轻声问。
"Young-woman is come-see library (POSS) (SUGG)?" Old-person soft-voice ask.
“You came to see the library, didn't you?” the old man asked softly.
林静吃了一惊：“您怎么知道？”
Lin-Jing eat (PERF) one-startle: "You-(polite) how know?"
Lin Jing started. “How did you know?”
“几十年来，偶尔会有一个人坐到这张长椅上，眼神和你一样。”老人微微笑。
"Several-ten year come, occasionally will have one (M) person sit to this (M) long-bench top, eyes-look and you same." Old-person slightly-smile.
“Once in a great while, over the decades, someone sits on this bench with eyes just like yours,” he said with a faint smile.
他叫陈明远，今年八十七岁。
He call Chen-Mingyuan, this-year eighty-seven year-old.
His name was Chen Mingyuan, and he was eighty-seven.
小时候，他家就住在这条街的尽头。
Small time-period, his family precisely live at this (M) street (POSS) end.
As a boy he had lived at the end of this very street.

“I was ten that year,” he said. “Mr. Zhou came to this empty lot every day, drawings under his arm.”

那个有钱人是城里最大的赞助商，叫钱启财。

The wealthy man was the city's biggest sponsor, a man named Qian Qicai.
钱启财靠工厂赚了一大笔钱，可是工厂里出过事，死了二十几个工人，他用钱把事情压了下来。
Qian-Qicai rely-on factory earn (PERF) one big-(M) money, but factory inside happen (EXP) incident, die (PERF) twenty several (M) worker, he use money (BA) matter press (PERF) down-come.
Qian Qicai had made a fortune from his factories, but an accident there had killed more than twenty workers, and he had buried the matter with money.
“周先生开始很愿意建造这座图书馆。”老人说。
"Zhou Mister begin very willing build-construct this (M) library." Old-person say.
“At first Mr. Zhou was glad to build the library,” the old man said.
“他设计了一年多，每一个细节都想得很美。”
"He design (PERF) one-year more, every (M) detail all think (COMP) very beautiful."
“He spent more than a year on the design, every detail beautifully thought through.”
“可是后来，他听说了工厂的事。”
"But afterward, he hear-say (PERF) factory (POSS) matter."
“Then he heard about the factory.”
“他来到空地上，把图纸卷起来，对钱启财说：‘这座建筑太美了，不能属于您。’”

钱启财气得发抖，威胁他，骂他，最后甩手离开。
Qian-Qicai angry (COMP) shake, threaten him, scold him, finally fling-hand leave.
Qian Qicai shook with rage, threatened him, cursed him, and finally stormed off.
周文山没有再画一张新图，也没有把这套图纸交给任何人。

Zhou Wenshan never drew a new design, nor handed these drawings to anyone.
他把它们锁进自己的木箱里，回到北方，第二年冬天病倒了。

回到大学，林静思考了很久要不要发表这个发现。

她最后写了一篇很短的文章，没有附上图纸。

In the end she wrote a very short article, with no drawings attached.

Its title was “The Silence of an Architect.”
她写道：周文山留下的不是一座建筑，而是一次选择。

图纸她锁进自己的抽屉，没有再公开。

The drawings she locked into her own drawer, and never showed again.
有的作品，本来就不是为众人而存在的。
Some (POSS) work, originally just not-is for crowd-of-people and-thus exist (POSS).
Some works, after all, were never meant to exist for the public.
