Late for the Test

HSK 3 · On the morning of an important test, Xiaoli’s alarm fails and an unlikely chain of help gets her there.

小丽早上起床,看了一下手机。
Xiaoli morning get-up, look (PERF) one-bit phone.
Xiaoli got up and glanced at her phone.
已经八点二十分了!

考试九点开始。
Test nine o'clock start.
The test started at nine.
她跳下床,没有时间吃早饭。
She jump-down bed, not have time eat breakfast.
She jumped out of bed — no time for breakfast.
她拿了笔记本就跑出门。
She take (PERF) notebook just run-out door.
She grabbed her notebook and ran out the door.
公共汽车太慢,她坐了一辆出租车。
Public-bus too slow, she sit (PERF) one (M) taxi.
The bus would be too slow, so she took a taxi.
可是路上车太多。
But road on car too many.
But the streets were jammed.
司机说:“现在这个时候,地铁更快。”
Driver says: "Now this (M) time, subway more fast."
The driver said, “At this hour, the subway’s faster.”
小丽下车,跑进地铁站。
Xiaoli get-off car, run-into subway station.
She jumped out and ran into the metro station.
在地铁里,她看了看时间——还有十五分钟。
At subway inside, she look (PERF) look time — still have fifteen minute.
On the train, she checked the time — fifteen minutes to spare.
她想:可能还有时间。
She think: maybe still have time.
She thought, “Maybe there’s still time.”
到了学校门口,她又跑起来。
Arrive (PERF) school door, she again run-start.
At the school gate, she started running again.
一位老师在门口:“小丽?”
One (M) teacher at door: "Xiaoli?"
A teacher at the gate called, “Xiaoli?”
小丽害怕了:“老师,我迟到了!”
Xiaoli scared (PERF): "Teacher, I late (PERF)!"
Xiaoli panicked, “Teacher, I’m late!”
老师笑:“考试九点半开始,今天换了时间。”
Teacher laugh: "Test nine-thirty start, today change (PERF) time."
The teacher smiled, “The test was moved to nine thirty.”
小丽差一点儿哭出来。
Xiaoli almost cry-out.
Xiaoli almost cried with relief.
她坐在椅子上喝了一杯水。
She sit at chair top drink (PERF) one cup water.
She sat down and drank a glass of water.
考试的时候,她想:从今天起,我一定要早一点儿起床。
Test (POSS) time, she think: from today from, I definitely want early a-bit get-up.
During the test she thought, “From now on, I’m getting up earlier.”
